Care Instructions
Hand embroidery, mirror work, and delicate fabrics need a bit more care than your everyday cottons. Follow these guidelines by fabric type to keep your Roohani pieces looking new for years, not just one season.
Cotton kurta sets & kurtis
- Hand wash separately in cold water for the first 2–3 washes, especially for printed and dyed pieces.
- Use a mild detergent. Avoid harsh whitening agents, which fade prints faster.
- Dry in shade, not direct sunlight — direct sun fades colour over time.
- Iron on medium heat. Iron prints inside-out to protect the design.
Mirror work & Aari embroidered pieces
- Hand wash only, in cold water, gently — never wring or twist.
- Keep embroidered areas away from rough scrubbing or abrasive surfaces.
- Dry flat in shade. Hanging can pull and distort embroidered sections over time.
- Do not iron directly over mirror work or embroidery — iron the surrounding fabric and let heat reach the embellishment indirectly, or use a pressing cloth.
Georgette & art silk (lehengas, anarkali gowns)
- Dry clean only. Georgette and art silk lose their drape and sheen with home washing.
- Store on a padded hanger, not folded, to prevent permanent creases in the flared skirt.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity when storing — both degrade silk fibres over time.
- Get any visible stains professionally treated promptly; georgette is hard to spot-clean at home without watermarking.
Organza dupattas (hand-painted & embroidered)
- Dry clean only — hand-painted motifs can run or fade with washing.
- Store flat or loosely rolled, not folded sharply, since organza creases permanently along hard fold lines.
- Avoid spraying perfume or deodorant directly onto the dupatta — it can stain or discolour hand-painted areas.
Resham & sequin embellished kurtas
- Hand wash cold, or dry clean for heavily embellished pieces.
- Turn inside out before washing to protect sequins and thread work from friction.
- Store flat or on a padded hanger — sequins can dig into other fabric if hung close together in a crowded wardrobe.
Shibori hand-dyed pieces
- Hand wash separately for at least the first 3–4 washes, since natural and hand-applied dyes can bleed slightly even after curing.
- Cold water only — hot water accelerates colour fade in hand-dyed fabric.
- Dry in shade, inside out, to protect the dye pattern from sun fading.
Kaftans & relaxed-fit loungewear
- Machine wash gentle cycle, cold water, or hand wash for printed pieces.
- Avoid the dryer — air dry to preserve the relaxed drape.
- Iron on low-medium heat as needed.
General storage tips
- Store embellished and silk pieces in breathable cotton garment bags, not plastic — plastic traps moisture and can yellow fabric over time.
- Refold heavy lehengas and gowns every few months to avoid permanent crease lines in storage.
- Keep a few silica gel packets or neem leaves in your wardrobe to deter moisture and pests, especially during monsoon season.
- Never store damp clothing — always ensure a piece is completely dry before folding it away.
Quick rule of thumb
If a product page doesn't specify, check for these signals: heavily embellished or richly coloured pieces (lehengas, anarkali gowns, hand-painted dupattas) almost always need dry cleaning. Simple cotton kurtas and kaftans are safe for gentle hand or machine wash.
